Charles-Amable Lenoir (1860-1926)

FRENCH ACADEMIC PAINTER, PORTRAIT OF A NYMPH.
A FINE ART PAINTING OF EXCEPTIONAL SUBTLETY AND BEAUTY

Product Description

SoldGreyLenoir was a student at the Ecole Nationale Des Beaux Arts in Paris where he obtained the Second Grand Prix de Rome, for two consecutive years. He made his painting debut at the famous Paris Salon in 1887 and exhibited there thoughtout his life. He was awarded numerous medals at the Salon and had the honor of being elected to the Legion d’honneur in 1903.

A friend of the renowned William Bouguereau (Lenoir even painted a portrait of Bouguereau’s wife, Elizabeth Gardner, in 1895), and one of his finest students, Lenoir’s paintings are part of the permanent collections in museums worldwide. This beautifully painted Nymph, which measures 18″ by 15″, is considered to be one of Lenoir’s finer works, as it is closer in style to Bouguereau than some of his other paintings. It is artist-signed, dated and has been relined.

It is the opinion of Andrea Fisher that this portrait is of the artist’s wife, Eugenie Lucchesi.

We are grateful to Fred Ross, world-renowned art scholar, for examining and authenticating our painting. Mr. Ross is the leading authority on William Bouguereau and coauthor of the Catalogue Raisonne William Bouguereau: His Life and Works. He is also the Founder and Chairman of the highly respected online museum, the Art Renewal Center. This painting, now in a private collection, is listed on the Art Renewal site among images of Lenoir’s other paintings. They may be viewed at ArtRenewal.org.  The Art Renewal site can also be accessed from our Links page.
